On the southwestern edge of Murten's old town, Murten Castle rises, a fortress on the shores of Lake Murten. Its origins date back to the mid-13th century, and it is closely linked to the town's fortifications, of which it forms a part.

History+

The construction of Murten Castle began around the mid-13th century under the rule of Peter II of Savoy. It was built on an irregular pentagonal ground plan. The oldest surviving component is the square keep from the original construction period. Between 1476 and 1540, and again in the late 18th century, the castle's residential buildings were repeatedly redesigned, particularly when it was converted into a bailiff's residence. These alterations resulted in a blend of various architectural eras, from late Gothic to late Renaissance and Baroque, being united in the structure today.
