Mutzschen Castle

On the eastern edge of Grimma in the district of Leipzig, on a spur above the Mutzschener Wasser, lies Mutzschen Castle. The origins of the site date back to the Bronze Age.

History+

As early as the early Bronze Age, a fortification of the Lusatian culture existed here. In the 9th century, a Wendish castle was documented, followed by a burgward after the eastward settlement in the late 10th century. In 1081, King Henry IV gifted the villages of Mutzschen, Böhlitz, and Mehlis to Chitele, with the document referring to villages, not a castle. Around 1290, but certainly before 1308, the Burgraves of Leisnig acquired the castle and lordship of Mutzschen. Around 1400, the complex passed into the possession of the von Starschedel family.
