Näsbyholm Castle
Näsbyholm Castle, a historic estate in the municipality of Trelleborg in the Swedish region of Skåne, stands today as an imposing structure. Originally situated on an island in a lake, it bears witness to a long and eventful history dating back to the Middle Ages.
History+
The first mention of the Näsbyholm estate was in the possession of Knight Jens Nielsen Galen, the father of Archbishop Peder Jensen. At the end of the 15th century, Archbishop Birger Gunnersen had a strongly fortified castle complex built, which was connected to the mainland by a drawbridge. In the course of the Reformation, the estate fell to the Swedish Crown in 1536. The original lake surrounding the castle was largely drained in 1872. The old castle was largely demolished in 1860 and replaced by the current building. A devastating fire in 1955 almost completely destroyed the castle, after which it was rebuilt in a simplified form.
