Namedy Castle

Namedy Castle, located in the Namedy district of Andernach in the Mayen-Koblenz district of Rhineland-Palatinate, was built in the 14th century by the patrician family von Hausmann as a small moated castle, incorporating the noble court "Niederhof". The knight mayor of Koblenz and council member Dr. iur. Antonius von Hausmann zu Namedy (also Anton von Husmann), brother of the last abbess of the Cistercian monastery of Namedy, Hildegard von H(a)usmann (1518–1562), and his second wife Margeretha von Eltz expanded the castle complex between 1550 and 1560. It was later extended in the Baroque style.

In 1896, Arnold Freiherr von Solemacher-Antweiler converted the castle into a palace complex in the Historicist style. The residential wing was raised, and two side wings were added. In 1908, Prince Karl Anton zu Hohenzollern acquired the property and had a single-story Hall of Mirrors with two corner towers added to the northwest wing by the Andernach architect Clemens Kroth. An attached hotel wing was later removed. In 1933, the stair tower and the southeast tower received new Baroque-style cupolas.

During the First World War, Princess Joséphine maintained a military hospital in the Hall of Mirrors. In 1919, Albrecht Prince von Hohenzollern took over the castle, and in 1988, his son Godehard Prince von Hohenzollern took over the property and developed it into a cultural center, hosting concerts from classical to jazz, theater performances, and art exhibitions. The German Foundation for Monument Protection was also involved in the restoration of the Hall of Mirrors in 2003. Since Godehard's death in 2001, his widow Heide Princess von Hohenzollern has managed the castle and its cultural events.
