Nehlen Castle (Berwicke)

The first documented mention of Haus Nehlen dates back to 1268, when it likely served to protect the northern border of the County of Rüdenberg. It was the original ancestral seat of the noble family of Nehlen. In 1350, ownership transferred to a branch of the Plettenberg family. Dietrich von Plettenberg, Provost of Paderborn and Münster, had the current castle complex built in the 17th century for his nephew Wolter Heinrich von Plettenberg. The Dortmund stonemason Dietrich Gerlinckhaus was the executing architect. At the end of the 17th century, the property passed to the Boeselager family, who moved their main residence to Höllinghofen Castle in the 1770s. Thereafter, Haus Nehlen was managed by tenants and administrators until it passed into the possession of a farmer in 1977.

Nehlen Castle is located in Berwicke, a district of the municipality of Welver in the Soest district, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 68 m above sea level.
