To be privately owned

In Etzelwang-Neidstein, within the Amberg-Sulzbach district of Bavaria, Neidstein Castle, a 16th-century edifice, stands on a spur of the Schlossberg. This complex, once the center of a Hofmark, is located in the Franconian Switzerland-Veldenstein Forest Nature Park.

History+

Neidstein's origins trace back to the 12th century, when a Neipert Nitstein was mentioned as a ministerialis of the Counts of Sulzbach. In the 13th century, Rupertus de Nietstein appeared as an imperial ministerialis. After the extinction of the Lords of Neidstein, the castle passed into the hands of other noble families at the end of the 13th century and was acquired by Louis IV, Holy Roman Emperor, in 1326. The Wittelsbachs mortgaged the estate to various noble families until it was mortgaged to Hans von Brandt in 1466.
