New Barenaue Castle

The castle was commissioned between 1857 and 1862 by the von Bar family, who had previously resided at the Alt Barenaue moated castle. The design was by the Hanoverian architect Hermann Hunaeus. A collection of Roman coins, found by local farmers and owned by the family, played a role in locating the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest. In 1884, numismatist Julius Menadier, on behalf of Theodor Mommsen, cataloged the collection, which included 1 aureus, 179 denarii, and 2 asses. This led Mommsen to believe that the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest might have taken place near Kalkriese Hill. The collection was lost during the occupation by Allied troops in 1945.
