Neuburg Castle

Neuburg Castle is a castle located near Obrigheim (Baden) on a hill above the Neckar river.

The castle first appears in sources in 1384. At that time, the complex was owned by Berthold Vetzer von Obrigheim. In 1401, Berthold Vetzer sold the castle to King Ruprecht of the Palatinate, who mortgaged the complex in 1405 to the widow of the Margrave of Baden, Mechthild von Sponheim. Redeemed around 1413 by Count Palatine Otto I of Mosbach, the castle was repeatedly granted as a fief from 1424 by the Mosbach Counts Palatine and later the Counts Palatine of the Rhine to deserving Palatine vassal families: from 1424 to the von Wittstatt, also known as von Hagenbach, from 1468 to the von Massenbach, from 1482 to the Sinolt von Rheinheim, and from 1505 to the Lords von Rossau. During the Thirty Years' War, the complex was granted by the Bavarian government to Chancellor Georg Friedrich von Iselbach, who lost the fief again in 1648. After that, Neuburg was owned by the Cloß family and later the Metzger family. In 1759, the complex was finally handed over to an Obrigheim farmer and his heirs as an hereditary leasehold.

In 1845, Count Karl Theodor zu Leiningen-Billigheim (grandson of the Palatine Elector Karl Theodor) acquired the complex and subsequently had it converted into a castle in the style of castle romanticism. In the first half of the 20th century, the complex was often empty and was used during the Third Reich as a district training castle for the NSDAP. Since 1959, the castle has served as a hotel and restaurant.
