Neuburg Castle

The first documented mention of Neuburg dates back to 1384, when it was owned by Berthold Vetzer von Obrigheim. In 1401, Vetzer sold the castle to King Ruprecht of the Palatinate. In 1405, the king mortgaged the property to Mechthild von Sponheim, the widow of the Margrave of Baden. Around 1413, the castle was redeemed by Count Palatine Otto I of Mosbach. From 1424 onwards, the Counts Palatine of Mosbach and later the Counts Palatine of the Rhine repeatedly granted Neuburg as a fief to deserving Palatine vassal families, including the von Wittstatt (from 1424), the von Massenbach (from 1468), the Sinolt von Rheinheim (from 1482), and the Lords von Rossau (from 1505). During the Thirty Years' War, the fief was granted by the Bavarian government to Chancellor Georg Friedrich von Iselbach, who lost it again in 1648.
