History+
The origins of Neuchâtel Castle date back to the 10th century, when a wooden castle on the rocky spur above the lake was replaced by a stone house named “New Castle.” The Lords of Fenis, an influential family who later adopted the title of Count and named themselves after the castle, consolidated their rule in the region. Under Count Ulrich, son of the first Count of Neuchâtel, a representative residence with a church was built. The Counts of Neuchâtel expanded their territorial dominion, stretching from the lake shores into the Jura valleys. In the 16th century, the county came under the control of the Swiss Confederates before being returned to Johanna von Hochberg in 1529. After various owners, the Principality of Neuchâtel passed to the King of Prussia in 1707, who held it until the fall of the empire in 1918.
