Neudegg Castle
Neudegg Castle, also known as Meran Castle, is a small Baroque castle in Nonntal, a district of Salzburg.
Neudegg Castle is reminiscent of the old Salzburg noble family of the Lords of Neudegg (1297 Leopold von Neudegg, 1388 Simon von Neudegg). It belonged to the Nonnberg manorial estate and was built on the former laundry bleachery of Nonnberg Abbey, paying an annual tribute (Burgrechtspfennig, "Pachtschilling") to Nonnberg Abbey until 1848.
In 1460, the first known owner, Niklas Venediger, is documented, who built a new small castle on this site, which has been preserved in its core.
In the 16th century, it was converted into a manor house with four corner turrets, which received onion domes in the 17th century. The outbuilding opposite the chapel has a historicizing facade from around 1900.
The Castle Chapel+
In 1660, the well-preserved freestanding chapel was built. The outwardly simple building with a straight choir end has an altar (also from 1660), on which the coats of arms of the founding couple Christoph Freisauff and his wife Katharina are found on column pedestals. The altarpiece of Saint Christopher under the angel-surrounded depiction of Mary also points to the founder.
The Castle Today+
Since 1935, the castle has been owned by the Meran family, a collateral line of the Habsburg-Lorraine family, who are descendants of Archduke Johann, who had to relinquish his name and most of his dignities due to his morganatic marriage. The castle consists of a central building in rather poor condition, a chapel, and a farmstead. It is not publicly accessible but is clearly visible from the street.
