First documented in 1165 as "Nuvenburg", the allod (freehold property) came into the possession of the von Maienthal family in the 14th century. In 1348, they endowed the early mass on St. Michael's Day in Kairlindach, where an "altar stone at the Newenburg" is mentioned.
