Neuenburg Castle

The origins of Neuenburg Castle date back to 1462, when Count Gerd of Oldenburg initiated its construction as a strategic counterweight to the East Frisian Friedeburg. The complex, originally known as “Nige Borg,” was intended to intimidate the Frisians. Around 1640, Matthäus Merian captured the bastioned castle, surrounded by a moat, in an engraving. Towards the end of the 16th century, it was converted from a fortress into a residential castle. After the death of Count Anton Günther of Oldenburg in 1667, it served as the residence for his widow. In the late 17th century, a stud farm for breeding the Oldenburg horses was established at the castle.
