The origins of today's Neufraunhofen Castle lie in a noble seat called Öd, first documented in 1180. The lords of Öd at that time held the office of cupbearer at the Wittelsbach court, which led to their ancestral seat being named "Schenkenöd." Around 1390, Wilhelm von Fraunhofen took possession, rebuilt the complex, and renamed it "Neuen Fraunhofen," while a relative remained in the original Fraunhofen, which was henceforth called "Alten Fraunhofen."
