Neuguttenberg Castle

The origins of the Guttenberg family, who resided at Guttenberg Castle, date back to 1148, when Gundeloh von Plassenberg, a ministerialis of the Counts of Andechs-Merania, is considered the first in the lineage of the Guttenbergs. In the early 14th century, the Guttenbergs attempted to expand their property to Untersteinach. With the acquisition of Guttenberg Castle in 1315, the family's name changed from "von der Plassenburg" to "von Guttenberg." Heinrich von Plassenberg, known as von Guttenberg, is considered the builder of Altguttenberg Castle. In 1482, disputes arose when a part of what would become Neuguttenberg Castle was built into the courtyard of Altguttenberg Castle. This led to the occupation of Altguttenberg in 1490 by Margrave Siegmund of Brandenburg-Kulmbach, who perceived the construction of Neuguttenberg as a threat.
