Neuhabsburg Castle (Meggen)
In Meggen, Canton Lucerne, on the shores of Lake Lucerne, stands Neuhabsburg Castle. It was built on the remains of an older fortification and today is a privately used estate in neo-Gothic style.
History+
The origins of Neuhabsburg date back to the years 1244 and 1245, when the Habsburgs built a castle. After the founding of the Swiss Confederacy in 1291, the Habsburg fortress posed an obstacle to the young confederation. However, its destruction did not occur until 1352. Of the original complex, parts of the square main tower, a curtain wall, and some other building remains are still preserved today. The current Neuhabsburg Castle was newly built in 1871 in the neo-Gothic style.
