Neuhardenberg Castle

The origins of the castle date back to 1763, when Joachim Bernhard von Prittwitz received the manor Quilitz as a royal donation for saving Frederick the Great in the Battle of Kunersdorf. Construction work on the castle began shortly thereafter, possibly as early as 1786. Carl Gotthard Langhans was involved in the interior design. In 1811, Quilitz was sold back to the crown before being handed over in 1814 by King Frederick William III to State Chancellor Karl August Prince von Hardenberg. Between 1820 and 1823, the originally Baroque castle underwent a classical redesign by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, during which it was extended by one floor. At the same time, the locality and the castle were renamed Neu-Hardenberg. Hermann von Pückler-Muskau and Peter Joseph Lenné redesigned the landscape garden in 1821. After the assassination attempt of July 20, 1944, the Hardenberg family was dispossessed.
