Neuhaus Castle

The origins of Neuhaus Castle date back to the second quarter of the 13th century, when a fortified house was built. It was first documented in 1246 in connection with Ulrich von Neuhaus. In the 14th century, the princely castle was administered by caretakers before it passed to the Wolzogen family in 1595. Hans Christoph von Wolzogen had the complex redesigned at the beginning of the 17th century and also had the associated church built. As Protestants, the Wolzogens lost their property during the Counter-Reformation, and the castle subsequently changed hands several times. In 1683, it was plundered and set on fire by Ottomans. From 1694, it housed a glass and mirror factory. Under Emperor Charles VI, the castle was restored from 1724, and a new wing for the mirror factory was built.
