The origins of the site date back to 1301, when a marsh castle near Cottbus was mentioned as “novum castrum.” The current castle was likely built towards the end of the 16th century for the von Kottwitz family as a three-wing complex. It underwent numerous alterations, including a redesign of the west wing around 1760 and a modernization at the end of the 19th century. In the 20th century, the castle belonged to Marie von Kottwitz and temporarily served as a residence for her husband Ernst von Heynitz, with the estate being leased in 1914. The north wing was demolished in 1935. After World War II, the estate owners were dispossessed during the land reform in the Soviet Occupation Zone. A renovation of the castle took place between 2004 and 2006, and since 2015, the castle has been in private ownership.
