Neumatzen Castle

Schloss Neumatzen, also known as Schloss Lipperheide, is a castle-style building in the Historicism style in the municipality of Münster near Brixlegg in Tyrol. It was built at the end of the 1880s by Franz von Lipperheide, a successful German publisher. In the immediate vicinity are Lichtwehr Castle, Kropfsberg Castle, and Matzen Castle. To the east of the castle lies the park of Matzen Castle.

Franz von Lipperheide and his wife Frieda published fashion magazines in several languages and maintained residences in Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Rome, and Cairo. After a trip to Rome, Lipperheide also wanted to acquire the castle-like Matzen Castle, but negotiations fell through, and the publisher only managed to acquire a plot of land near the desired property. The publisher rounded off this property with further purchases and commissioned Georg von Hauberrisser, the architect of Munich's city hall, with the planning and construction of a castle or rather a small castle with 730 m² of living space. The castle is largely preserved in its original state and is a protected monument. The surrounding park was also opulently designed as a landscape garden and equipped with terraces, fountains, a grotto, and a columned pergola.

Schloss Lipperheide hosted Franz von Defregger, Gerhart Hauptmann, Julius Lessing, Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach, Peter Rosegger, and Hugo Wolf, who dedicated his Elf's Song from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream to Frieda von Lipperheide.

Below Matzen Castle and near the Lipperheide's small castle is Gut Matzen, which was part of the Lipperheide's possessions and is now run as a restaurant. Josef von Pfeiffersberg, who sold Matzen Castle to Fanny Schnorr von Carolsfeld in 1873, lived at Gut Matzen for another ten years until he transferred it to Franz von Lipperheide in 1883. Lipperheide's widow sold it in 1913 to Engelbert and Maria Hosp. Today, the estate is owned by the Messner family.
