In Tangeln in the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel, Neumühle Castle is considered one of Germany's most recent castle constructions. It was built in the late 1930s and served as a replacement for an expropriated family castle.

History+

The history of Neumühle Castle begins in 1938, when the von der Schulenburg family, whose Wolfsburg Castle was expropriated due to the founding of the 'City of the KdF-Wagen', needed a new residence. With compensation of 560,000 Reichsmark, they began building a new castle on their own forest property in Tangeln. Designed by architect Paul Bonatz, the reinforced concrete building was completed and occupied in 1942. Outwardly, it resembles Wolfsburg Castle, which was built in the Weser Renaissance style. During World War II, it served as a storage location for parts of the Bremen Art Gallery's collection and housed the von der Schulenburg family treasure.
