Neunheilingen Castle

The first documented mention of Neunheilingen dates back to 1158 in documents from Fulda Monastery. Until 1638, the village and its castle were owned by the Lords of Heilingen. Subsequently, ownership passed to the von Werthern family. In 1716, they erected the current castle building. A resident was Countess Johanna Luise von Werthern, an educated lady. Duke Carl August and Goethe visited Neunheilingen Castle in 1781, with Goethe immortalizing this visit in his work "Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship." The von Werthern family resided at the estate until 1819. In that year, a fire destroyed a large part of the village. After several changes of ownership, the castle belonged to the Limpert family until the late 1940s, before passing into municipal ownership.
