Neupernstein Castle

Neupernstein Castle is located in Kirchdorf an der Krems in the district of the same name in Upper Austria (Pernsteiner Straße 40).

A farmstead in Hanvelden was first mentioned in a document from 1228. This was granted to Gundacker von Steyr, and later came to the Bishop of Bamberg via the Margrave of Andechs. The Bishop then gifted the farmstead to Spital am Pyhrn Abbey. From there, it was passed on as a fief. Gottfried von Truchsen made a donation to Pernstein in 1282. Christian von Hanvelde, a member of the lower nobility, is mentioned as another owner in 1340. Around 1457, the farmstead was owned by Lienhart Haider, administrator of Scharnstein Castle. In 1613, according to a document from Spital am Pyhrn Abbey, the sub-official Hans Hauser at Hanselmayr is named as the owner. In 1647, the farm passed to Johann Michael Perger. The farm served as a lodging for the provosts of Kremsmünster. In 1665, it was sold to Georg Christoph Haas, Kremsmünster administrator at Pernstein. Then the farm came to Kremsmünster Abbey by inheritance. From 1692, the Hanfeldhof served as the administrative seat of Pernstein, although it had already been referred to as a "Pfleghof" (administrative farm) in earlier times.

Around 1770, Neupernstein was leased to the Prince of Windischgrätz. From 1790, the district commissariat and the administration of the tax district were housed here. Since the mid-19th century, the castle has served purely as a residence. A Count of Windischgrätz owned the castle between 1920 and 1930. From him, it returned to Kremsmünster Monastery and currently to the municipality of Kirchdorf an der Krems.
