Neuscharfenberg

The early history of Wenigenlupnitz is closely linked to the Lords of Lupnitz, who appeared as service nobility of Fulda Monastery from 1224. Later, the Lords of Erffa, whose ancestral seat was Erffa Water Castle, took over the estates in Wenigenlupnitz. In 1493, the brothers Dietrich and Hans von Farnroda acquired these possessions. Through marriage, parts of the property came to Andreas Friedrich von Uetterodt, whose family already owned Scharfenburg Castle, which was destroyed in the Saxon Fratricidal War in 1446. Subsequently, a “Fortified House” was built in Wenigenlupnitz, which was converted into a residential castle around 1596. A major fire in 1795 destroyed the castle, the estate, and parts of the village.
