Neustrelitz Castle

The remains of the castle, which was after 1945 senselessly destroyed, can be visited.

Neustrelitz Castle was once the main residence of the Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and served as the home of the ducal family. After 1918, it housed the state parliament of the Free State. Today, only a few remnants of the building, which was destroyed by fire in 1945 and later demolished, remain.

History+

The castle's origins lie in a single-story half-timbered house on the Glienecke leasehold estate, which Duke Adolf Friedrich III had built. After a fire at the residential castle in Strelitz in 1712, the ducal family lived in temporary accommodations. Duchess Dorothea Sophie then commissioned Christoph Julius Löwe to extensively expand and convert the hunting lodge between 1726 and 1731, financed by relatives from Holstein and without her husband's knowledge. Under subsequent dukes, the complex was expanded and developed into a typical Baroque, three-winged residence with an open courtyard of honor. Around 1755, staircases modeled after Versailles were built under Duke Adolf Friedrich IV.
