Neutenstein Castle

In the second half of the 12th century, the Bavarian monastery of Walderbach received the area around Untergrafendorf as a gift from the Burgraves of Regensburg. Stewards were appointed to protect the monastic possessions. However, a manorial estate existing here is only documented since 1376. From the steward's seat, a small moated castle gradually developed. Andreas von Himmelberg is mentioned as the lord of the castle in 1468.

In 1564, the monastery sold the lordship to Joachim Wisent, who had the residence expanded into a castle-like structure around 1600. Through his daughter Barbara, the estate passed to her husband Wolf Christoph von Velderndorf. King Rudolf II allowed him in 1608 to give the castle the name Neydenstein and to call himself after it.

Hans Gottfried Velderndorffer von Neutenstein had to sell the lordship in 1636 to Georg Rudolf von Kirchberg due to financial problems. After several inheritance disputes, Hans Ferdinand von Velderndorf was able to reacquire the castle for his family in 1667. In 1715, Count Wolfgang Georg Leopold Auersperg inherited the property, but it was already sold in 1732 to Wenzel Graf Breuner. Towards the end of the 18th century, the lords of the castle changed several times.

In 1808, Franz Anton Maria Graf Bussy-Mignot acquired Neutenstein. In 1865, the castle passed by marriage to Major General Count Arthur Andreas Segur-Cabanac. In 1909, Leo Graf Segur-Cabanac was the owner of the estate. Today it belongs to the architect Dipl. Ing. Johannes Baar von Baarenfels. The building was exemplarily restored from 1971 onwards.
