Neutrauchburg Castle

Count Franz Anton von Waldburg-Zeil came into possession of the County of Trauchburg through inheritance in 1772. Since then, the family has borne the name "Waldburg-Zeil-Trauchburg". Count Anton designated Mechensee as the new administrative center of the county. The completion of his extensive construction measures was the Amtshaus (administrative building) in 1785/86, which is today's castle. It housed the chief administrative office and the manorial archive. It was also Count Franz Anton who renamed Mechensee to "Neutrauchburg". Only since the 19th century has Neutrauchburg Castle been privately used by the princely house of Waldburg-Zeil-Trauchburg, partly as a residence for the hereditary comital family, partly as a dower house for the princesses. From 1848 to 1856, the castle served as a private boarding school for Prince Constantin von Waldburg-Zeil-Trauchburg. Until her death in 1953, Countess Monika, the mother of the current Prince Georg von Waldburg-Zeil, lived in Neutrauchburg Castle. In 2008, the castle was extensively restored and converted into a hotel. On June 6, it was opened as a castle hotel, conference and seminar center and has since enjoyed great popularity among guests from Germany and abroad due to its elegance and personal atmosphere.
