In the Swiss municipality of Nidau, Nidau Castle, a complex with origins as a moated castle, is situated at an elevation of 431 meters above sea level. Today, it combines cantonal administrative functions with a museum.

History+

The origins of Nidau Castle date back to around 1140, when the Counts of Neuchâtel built a first wooden castle. A document from 1196 confirms the existence of this early complex. In the 13th century, a stone moated castle was erected on the same site, with the water level of Lake Biel being significantly higher at that time.
