Nidfurn Castle

Around 1620, Nidfurn Castle was built by Peter I. of the Blumer family of Nidfurn, utilizing plans from his father Othmar III. which still adhered to the late 16th-century medieval building style. The Blumer family provided several bailiffs for various vogteien such as Baden, Werdenberg, Lauis (Locarno), Freiamt, and Sargans, which is why the estate was also known as the Blumer Bailiff's House. The castle was erected on the foundations of an older building from 1300, with reinforced walls and a large staircase still visible in the cellar. With six stories, the entirely stone-built castle was the tallest building in the canton of Glarus at the time. Despite later alterations and renovations, the house's original main structure has been largely preserved.

Nidfurn Castle is located in Nidfurn, in the canton of Glarus, Switzerland, at an elevation of approximately 565 meters above sea level.

Today, Nidfurn Castle is privately owned. Inside, some rooms with original wood paneling, parquet flooring, ceilings, and earthenware stoves are preserved. This historic property can be visited by appointment.
