Niederosterwitz Castle
Niederosterwitz Castle, located in the municipality of St. Georgen am Längsee, lies west of Hochosterwitz Castle. The simple castle building is surrounded by a park.
In 1541, the estate, along with the castle, was acquired by Christoph Khevenhüller von Aichelberg. In 1645, Anton von Aichholt, the burgrave of Hochosterwitz, bought the castle. Since 1690, Niederosterwitz has been the domicile of the Khevenhüller family.
The castle is built on a hook-shaped floor plan. The eastern wing is the oldest part of the complex. It was expanded after 1645 and extended in 1690 with the elongated south wing. The western wing was added in the late 18th or early 19th century. The facade is structured by flat cornice bands and ox-eye windows in the mezzanine.
On the northeast side, on a terrace, there is a small, hexagonal chapel with a colonnade. Inside, equipped with a cloister vault, stands a simple column altarpiece altar from 1670, decorated with cartouches.
