Niederweis Castle

The lordship of Niederweis, which once included the villages of Alsdorf, Kaschenbach, and Meckel, passed to the Cob von Nüdingen family from Bitburg around 1580 through the marriage of Christoph Cob to Margaretha Fock von Hübingen. As Christoph Cob's sons remained childless, Niederweis fell to his sister Maria Ursula, who had married Johann Hermann von der Heyden in 1680, after the death of Philipp Christoph Cob von Nüdingen in 1699. Thus, the property passed to the von der Heyden family. In 1751, Franz Eduard Anton Freiherr von der Heyden (1693–1755) had the present baroque castle built. The year of construction is in the keystone above the arched portal. The main facade is adorned with the alliance coat of arms of Franz Eduard Anton von der Heyden and his wife Marie Wilhelmine von Eltz-Rodendorf, who married in 1732.
