Niederwesen Castle is located in the Wesenufer district of the municipality of Waldkirchen am Wesen in the Schärding district, on the southern bank of the Danube.

History+

The origins of Niederwesen Castle are not fully clear, but a large part of the current building fabric dates back to the 17th century. After a fire in 1890, the castle was extensively rebuilt, incorporating some new structural elements. Historically, it is known that the Lords of Wesen owned the nearby Wesen Castle Ruin and the Oberwesen motte-and-bailey castle. This property passed to the Waldeckers in 1322, and Hadamar von Waldeck bequeathed Wesen Castle to the Prince-Bishopric of Passau in 1325. However, the exact relationship between this castle and the current Niederwesen Castle remains unclear.
