Niederwesen Castle
Niederwesen Castle is located on the southern bank of the Danube in the Wesenufer district of the municipality of Waldkirchen am Wesen in the Schärding district.
The castle largely dates from the 17th century, but some parts of the building are from 1890, when the castle was rebuilt after a fire. Nothing is known about the original builder of the castle itself. However, the current castle ruin Wesen and the lost castle site Oberwesen were mentioned in documents as being in the possession of the Lords of Wesen. In 1322, their possessions passed to the Waldeckers. In 1325, Hadamar von Waldeck bequeathed Wesen Castle to the Prince-Bishopric of Passau as an eternal mass foundation for himself and his family. The relationship between Wesen Castle and the castle is not clarified. In 1803, during secularization, the property came into public hands, and in 1824, the castle was auctioned off.
Later, the Niklas brewery was located in the castle, which was taken over in 1938 by the Baumgartner brewery, headquartered in Schärding. The Baumgartner brewery initially continued to operate the site, but in 1975, the brewery in Wesenufer closed, and in 1993, the lemonade production there was also discontinued.
Niederwesen Castle today+
Between 2006 and 2008, extensive adaptations were made to continue using the castle complex. Today, the pro mente Upper Austria association, a psychosocial support institution, operates a seminar hotel and a small market shop here. The complex is now known as Wesenufer: Seminar Culture on the Danube.
From the inner courtyard, two-story Tuscan arcades from the 17th century can be seen on the left. The bay window and the entire upper floor of the main building house the rooms of the seminar hotel. Parts of a restaurant are located in the winter garden, which is attached to the two-story, cross-vaulted arcade. A new building wing connects the main building with the brewhouse, which dates from the time of brewery use, and whose brick double chimney still recalls that phase. The roof skin, facade, and inner shell of the respective wings could be restored according to their traditional appearance. The wooden box windows underwent partial supplementation and revision. The historic wooden floorboards were retained. Inside and out, only lime plastering techniques and slaked lime coloring were used. The renovation of Niederwesen Castle was awarded by the Federal Monuments Office as Monument of the Month.
The event rooms of the castle are also available to the municipality of Waldkirchen am Wesen as a cultural and event venue.
