History+

A smaller castle complex already stood at the current site of the castle in the mid-14th century. Around 1400, the bailiff Wilhelm von Vlatten erected the palas of the water-encircled Gymnicher Burg. In the 15th century, ownership passed to Konrad Scheiffart von Merode-Bornheim through marriage. In the mid-16th century, Wilhelm Scheiffart von Merode and Agnes von Bylandt added the west wing. At the end of the 16th century, the castle fell to the family of Baron Johann Otto von Gymnich, who gave it its popular name.
