Nordborg Castle

Nordborg Castle, one of Denmark's oldest castle complexes, rises on the island of Als in Southern Denmark. Originally a medieval fortress, it evolved over centuries into a significant historical structure, now housing a boarding school.
History+
The origins of Nordborg Castle date back to around 1150, when Svend Grathe had it built as a defensive post against Wendish incursions. Initially known as Alsborg, it was soon renamed Nordborg. The fortress was continuously expanded and played an important role in Danish history; King Erik V was imprisoned here for a time, and Waldemar IV conquered it in 1358. In 1564, the castle came into the possession of John the Younger. After several military conflicts in the 17th century, which led to damage and a fire in 1665, a Baroque castle was erected on the ruins by 1688. In 1729, the estate passed to the Danish royal family before being privatized in 1766 and gradually falling into disrepair over the next 140 years. It was only during the Prussian era that a reconstruction took place, largely giving the castle its current appearance. After World War I and the cession of Northern Schleswig to Denmark, it was used as a folk high school in 1921.
