Noschkowitz Castle
In Noschkowitz, a district of Ostrau in the Mittelsachsen district, Saxony, stands Noschkowitz Castle, a Renaissance castle from the 16th century. It is one of the last fully preserved manorial estates in the region.
History+
The origins of Noschkowitz Castle date back to the 16th century, with the east wing of the complex even being dated to the 15th century, suggesting a possible predecessor building. In 1574, the central tower was erected, and an alliance coat of arms of Hans von Taubenheim and Sophie von Zaschnitz from the same year adorns the main entrance. The gatehouse also dates from this construction period. In 1585, Sophie von Zaschnitz became embroiled in a witchcraft trial, which led to extensive investigations and arrests and even involved Elector August. Despite torture and a death sentence, which was initially delayed due to a retraction and a feigned pregnancy, the trial ended tragically.
