Oberau Castle

The castle's origins date back to 1274, when a defensive tower with a moat was built on this site. As early as 1286, it was converted into a fortified residential tower, notable for its internal staircase and external living quarters. In 1550, Ernst von Miltitz commissioned a new, elongated Renaissance building with gables next to the residential tower. A transformation into a Renaissance castle took place in 1594. In the 17th century, painted wooden ceilings were installed; although their planks were repurposed from 1807 onwards, the paintings themselves were preserved. In 1803, the castle underwent further reconstruction, resulting in stucco work.
