Oberaufseß Castle, a historical structure, is situated on the western edge of the Aufsess Valley. Built in the late 17th century, it stands out for its unusually strong fortifications for that period.

History+

The first documented mention of the name Oberaufseß dates back to 1326, though at that time it referred to the region and not a specific castle. In 1676, Aufseß Castle, later known as Unteraufseß, came into the possession of the brothers Friedrich and Karl Heinrich von Aufseß. Due to internal disputes between the brothers, Karl Heinrich von Aufseß began construction of the current Oberaufseß Castle from 1690. As early as 1692, an attempt by Bamberg troops to conquer the castle failed against its defenses.
