Oberberg Castle (Ruin) (Gossau)

The first documented mention of Oberberg Castle dates back to 1262, when it was owned by Cuonrad de Obernberg. In 1380, it passed into the hands of the noble Andwil family, specifically Junker Albrecht von Andwil. During the Appenzell War in 1406, the complex was captured and burned down by soldiers from St. Gallen and Feldkirch, but was rebuilt in the same year under Walter von Andwil. In 1452, Hans von Andwil the Younger sold the castle to the Holy Spirit Hospital of the city of St. Gallen. Following the Rorschach monastery breach in 1490, it became property of the Abbey of St. Gallen and served as the seat of the abbatial bailiffs.
