The place is first mentioned in 1078 as "Tollingen". It is uncertain whether Dollinger, celebrated around 930 in Regensburg as the victor over a giant "Hun" (probably Hungarian), had his ancestral seat here. The first documented owner of the moated castle was Ulrich von Mendorf in 1352.
