Obergriesbach Castle

Obergriesbach Castle is located in Obergriesbach in the district of Aichach-Friedberg (Bavaria).

In 1124, Ludlof von Hahnreith built a castle and a St. Stephen's Chapel in Obergriesbach. In 1468, Wigulaeus von Weichs took over Obergriesbach Castle (see tombstones in the parish church of St. Stephen), and in 1730, Imperial Countess Marie Violante Theresia von Thurn und Taxis bought the Hofmark. Since 1831, the Affing Barons von Gravenreuth have been the owners of the Hofmark (see coat of arms in the church), and the castle was mostly used as a widow's residence.

The former castle (forester's house) is an elongated hip-roofed building from the first half of the 18th century (external appearance early 20th century). The associated farm building, an elongated mansard-roofed building, dates from the early 19th century. The old judge's house, where once the administrators and judges of the Hofmark Obergriesbach governed the community, settled disputes, and judged the morality of the community, became the Schlosscafé in November 1948. Guests came not only from the immediate vicinity but often from far away to visit the old, renovated building with its artistically tasteful furnishings not far from Obergriesbach Castle and its idyllic garden. A number of prominent guests, such as Rockefeller heirs, Her Royal Highness Princess Pilar of Bavaria with Prince Ludwig of Bavaria, former Minister President Alfons Goppel, etc., also visited the Schlosscafé. For several years now, the Schlosscafé has only been used privately.
