Oberhausen Castle

The origins of the castle date back to the late 12th or early 13th century, when a fortified knight's seat, the “Oberhaus,” was established at a ford of the Emscher river. This secured a river crossing and was surrounded by a moat. In 1443, the property passed from the von Dücker family to the von der Hoven family. After inheritance disputes, it came into the possession of Conrad von Boenen in 1615. However, as the Boenen family preferred Schloss Berge as their main residence, the Oberhaus gradually fell into disrepair, exacerbated by looting during the Eighty Years' War and the Thirty Years' War.
