Oberhöflein Castle
Oberhöflein Castle, a former moated castle, is a four-winged building with two high towers in Oberhöflein (municipality of Weitersfeld) in the district of Horn in Lower Austria. It is a protected monument.
Oberhöflein Castle was first mentioned in the 13th century. In 1578, it was owned by Andreas Kielman von Kielmannsegg. In 1658, Ernst Ferdinand Freiherr von Breuner bought the castle. Renovations were carried out in the 16th century and in 1724 by Matthias Freiherr von Suttner. Since then, it has been owned by the Barons von Suttner. In 1945, among other things, the hall was damaged by fire.
Building Description+
Exterior
The castle is still surrounded by a moat, over which a stone bridge leads to the gate. The round-arched portal in the gate tower is decorated with a sundial. At the northwest corner there is a second, square tower. On three sides of the courtyard there are arcaded walkways from the Renaissance. Next to the castle are the farm building and the inn "Zum Schwarzen Adler".
Interior
A southeast room shows illusionistic wall paintings by Johann Bergl and Martin von Molitor around 1770. The existence of an earlier secret passage to the inn is mentioned by Schweickhardt.
