Oberkotzau Castle

Oberkotzau Castle is a castle complex in the market town of Oberkotzau. The history of the castle dates back to the seat of the von Kotzau family. The castle was destroyed several times, including during the Hussite Wars. In the 18th century, the complex was largely dilapidated and was rebuilt in the Baroque style. Elements of a tower and the chapel that were incorporated are still known. After the town fire of 1852, the castle complex was built in its present form.

For the descendants of the "unsuitable" marriage of Margrave Georg Albrecht the Younger, son of Georg Albrecht the Elder from the House of the Franconian Hohenzollerns and the commoner Lichtenberg Kastner's daughter Regina Magdalena Lutz, the name of the extinct knightly family von Kotzau was re-assigned and in the second generation endowed with the title of Baron and an augmented family coat of arms. The family moved into Oberkotzau Castle and inhabited it until 1962. The male line died out in 1976.
