Oberkotzau Castle

The origins of Oberkotzau Castle date back to a seat of the von Kotzau family. The complex suffered multiple destructions, including during the Hussite Wars. By the 18th century, the castle was largely dilapidated before being rebuilt in the Baroque style, incorporating elements of a tower and chapel. After a local fire in 1852, the castle complex acquired its current form. A unique turn in its history occurred when descendants of an unaristocratic union of Margrave Georg Albrecht the Younger were granted the name of the extinct knightly family of Kotzau. This family moved into the castle and resided there until 1962, before dying out in the male line in 1976.
