Obermayerhofen Castle

Obermayerhofen Castle is located in the southeast of Austria in the Styrian Thermal Region, in the municipality of Sebersdorf. The castle, situated within a 170,000 m² park, is operated as a castle hotel by the Counts Kottulinsky.

Obermayerhofen Castle emerged from a former manor farm, which developed into a knight's seat and was likely fortified. The first documented mention occurred in 1315. Heinrich Mayerhofer, Bishop of Gurk and Provost of St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna, was named as the owner.

In 1377, the Teuffenbach family purchased it and, during their more than 200 years of ownership, expanded the surrounding lordship through continuous acquisitions. Already at the beginning of the 16th century, the estates were devastated during the Turkish invasions. Only in 1574 could the castle be rebuilt, after Servaz von Teuffenbach had reunited the property. Both he and his wife Katharina von Herberstein died childless, so the ownership changed hands several times until 1777.

Josef Count Kottulinsky finally acquired the castle and the associated lordship. In 1924, it passed to Baroness von Taulow.
