Schloss Obernitz is on a narrow rock terrace in the Saale valley. Located in the Obernitz district of Saalfeld, it is an example of the transformation of a defensive structure into a Renaissance castle in Thuringia.

History+

A motte-and-bailey castle was already mentioned at this site in 1152. From 1258, the Lords of Obernitz appeared in documents as owners of the complex. In 1534, ownership transferred to the Lords of Thüna, who had the old castle demolished and a Renaissance castle built in its place. This building continues to serve as a residence to this day.
