Obernitz Castle

Obernitz Castle is located in the Obernitz district of the city of Saalfeld in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district in Thuringia.
Obernitz Castle stood on the site of the present castle, which is in need of renovation, on a narrow rock terrace in the Saale valley east of the Saale river and federal highway 85.
The motte-and-bailey castle of Obernitz was already mentioned in 1152. The Lords of Obernitz also appear in documents since 1258. Their property passed to the Lords of Thüna in 1534. They built a Renaissance castle on the site of the former castle. This still serves as a residence for several families (since 2004 owned by the Clemm von Hohenberg family).
On the south side stands a square tower with a baroque dome. Its lower parts probably date from the late Middle Ages. In the courtyard, next to the entrance, there is a spiral staircase tower.
