Obernzell Castle

The castle's origins date back to the early 15th century, when the Passau bishop Georg von Hohenlohe initiated the construction of a moated castle. His successor, Leonhard von Laiming, completed this project in 1426. Between 1581 and 1583, under Prince-Bishop Urban von Trennbach, a renovation transformed the building into a Renaissance palace. For centuries, it served as the seat of episcopal administrators and occasionally as a residence for the prince-bishops, for example, after a city fire in 1680. Following secularization at the beginning of the 19th century, the castle became the property of the Bavarian state and was used as an administrative building. A restoration between 1975 and 1977 finally made it accessible to the public as a ceramics museum.
