Obernzell Castle
Obernzell Castle is a former prince-bishop's moated castle in Obernzell. The Passau bishop Georg von Hohenlohe († 1423) began the construction of a moated castle, which his successor Leonhard von Laiming completed in 1426. Between 1581 and 1583, Prince-Bishop Urban von Trennbach had the building expanded into a representative Renaissance castle.
Until the 19th century, the castle served as the seat of episcopal administrators. Occasionally, the prince-bishops also stayed here, for example in 1680, when a city fire had devastated the residence. After the secularization in 1803/1806, the state of Bavaria took over the building and used it as an administrative building. The old gate tower was demolished in 1816. From 1975 to 1977, the castle was fundamentally restored and made accessible to the public as a ceramics museum.
Structure+
The castle is located on the banks of the Danube as a mighty four-story building with a half-hipped roof. The narrow side is adorned with an image of Mary with the infant Jesus. Adjacent to it on the east are still remnants of walls and round defensive towers. On the west side, a bridge leads over a drained moat to the entrance. The baroque garden figures come from Neuburg am Inn Castle.
On the first floor there is a late Gothic chapel with fragments of wall paintings (1425 to 1439). Worth seeing on the second floor is the so-called Knight's Hall with a reconstructed coffered ceiling. It regularly serves as a concert hall.
The Museum+
Around 1200 objects are on display in fifteen rooms covering a total of 850 m². They mainly come from the collections of the Bavarian National Museum, supplemented by loans. The majority of the total of 21 exhibition themes present handcrafted ceramics from their beginnings to the present day. In addition, tiles and faience and stoneware are shown.
