In Unken in the Salzburg region, Oberrain Castle stands on a hill above the Saalachtal valley. Originally known as Seidlgut, it evolved from a tavern into a castle-like building, which today houses offices.

History+

The origins of the estate date back to around 1400, when it consisted of two separate buildings: the Seidlgut and a tavern, with the innkeeping license initially belonging to the Seidlgut. Until 1848, the property was under the feudal lordship of the Archbishop of Salzburg. Oberrain passed through numerous hands, including the Seydl and Leyrer families, who held the estate for over 200 years. The castle underwent a transformation around 1890 when the German fertilizer manufacturer Hermann Schmidtmann acquired it and gave it its current appearance.
