Built in the 1730s, Oberschwappach Castle once served as an administrative center for the lands of the Cistercian monastery of Ebrach and as a summer residence for its abbots.

History+

The construction of Oberschwappach Castle took place in the 1730s. It fulfilled a dual function: it was both an administrative seat for the surrounding estates of the Cistercian monastery of Ebrach and a place for the summer residence of the Ebrach abbots. After the secularization in 1803 and the associated dissolution of the monastery, the last abbot, Eugen Montag, was exiled to Oberschwappach, where he died in 1811.
