Oberschwappach Castle

Oberschwappach Castle is a castle in Oberschwappach, a district of the municipality of Knetzgau, located on the northern edge of the Steigerwald forest in the Haßberge district in Bavaria.

The baroque castle, located in the center of the village and built in the 1730s, served to administer the surrounding possessions of the Cistercian monastery of Ebrach. It was also used for the summer residence of the Ebrach abbots. After the dissolution of Ebrach Monastery in 1803 (secularization), the last abbot of Ebrach, Eugen Montag, was exiled to Oberschwappach Castle. He died there in 1811. Subsequently, the castle had various owners and was in a poor structural condition when it was acquired by the municipality of Knetzgau in 1985. Today, the castle houses a museum, a kindergarten, and a restaurant. Concerts and cultural events take place in the Hall of Mirrors.

The museum comprises a local history collection and sacred art, and the state rooms can also be visited (including the Hall of Mirrors and the castle chapel).
