Oberstadt Castle

The origin of the castle lies in an old fortress, which was probably built before 1317 by Count Poppo VII of Henneberg. In 1380, the castle was given as a fief by Count Henneberg to the Lords Kießling. In 1397, the castle was destroyed as a robber's nest. The Kemenate (stone residential building) is still preserved. From it, a moated castle was built in the 15th and 16th centuries. In 1607, the castle was transformed by Humbert von Langen into the current moated castle. In 1945, the owners were dispossessed and expelled by the communists. Since 2000, Bernd Fleckenstein has owned the castle and had it extensively restored in 2006.
