Oberzwieselau Castle

The existing glassworks estate of Oberzwieselau was sold to Baron Johann von Degenberg in 1528. On July 10, 1568, Stephan von Klosen, guardian of Stephan von Degenberg's son, sold the estate to Joachim Poschinger by hereditary right. In 1614, Nikolaus Preißler was the master glassmaker, followed by his son Hans Preißler after his death. In 1698, Georg Poschinger is mentioned as the tenant of Oberzwieselau. From 1705-1808, the Hilz glassmaking family ruled. They built the castle in 1705. On November 3, 1808, Benedikt von Poschinger, the glassworks owner from Frauenau, married the widow Anna Hilz. In 1830, the castle was rebuilt. In 1855, besides the glass factory, the village had 16 scattered houses belonging to it, as well as a school and a brewery. On April 1, 1856, Benedikt von Poschinger divided the estate into the two hereditary estates of Oberzwieselau and Buchenau and handed them over to his sons Benedikt and Ferdinand.

The glassworks in Oberzwieselau became famous for its chalices and glasses in Byzantine style. However, it had to close in 1918. On February 21, 1925, Maria Helene von Poschinger married the Baltic Count Bernd August von Mellin (annulled 1934). Her daughter Barbara became the wife of Baron Joachim von Wolffersdorff. In 1929, the estate management built the Zwieselau Forest Railway, which was in operation until 1958.

In 1959, the castle served as a depiction of an East Prussian manor house during the filming of "Nacht fiel über Gotenhafen" (Night Fell Over Gotenhafen). Since 1961, Baron Ali von Wolffersdorff has managed the estate. In 1988, an 18-hole golf course was created on an area of 100 hectares, which was previously used for agriculture, forestry, or as a park. It was opened in 1993 by the first president of the golf club, founded in 1991, Baron von Wolffersdorff.
