Oedenthal Castle (Lüdenscheid)

The first documented mention of Oedenthal, then as Odincdala, dates back to 1160, when it was a tributary possession of the Schöpplenberg manor. In the 13th and 14th centuries, the Lords of Odendal also owned estates in Othlinghausen. A possible kinship with the Lords of Neuhoff is suggested by the similarity of their coats of arms. From the mid-16th century, Oedenthal changed hands among various noble families until it was auctioned in 1725 and acquired by Georg Hermann von Holtzbrinck. As he remained childless, his nephew Georg Wilhelm von Lent inherited the estate on condition of adopting the name von Holtzbrinck. His descendants inhabited Oedenthal for approximately 200 years. After a fire around 1865, the current castle was built, which has been in bourgeois ownership since 1931.
